Location, package, and how famous the DJ is, they all matter. In Hungary, an average DJ charges as much as the price of a wedding dress. Good DJs nowadays take a bigger slice of the wedding budget, as everyone strives to make the wedding more than just a boring sit-down dinner.

A good DJ is the assistant to the host / the right hand of the master of ceremonies, the “party” half of weddings, who entices everyone to the dance floor and ensures that even grandma parties to modern hits. And yes, some even bring lights to make the party even more spectacular. As a result, everyone can be in their best form in the evening, which also results in excellent photos/videos.

What services do wedding DJs provide? A wedding DJ not only plays recorded music at the reception, but also at the ceremony if there is no live music. A great DJ is not only outgoing and energetic, but also able to “feel the mood of the crowd” and choose the most appropriate music to keep the dance floor constantly buzzing. DJs typically have their own audiovisual equipment, and some of them offer additional services, such as professional sound and lighting, photo booths, etc.

We are often asked about the costs of this and the various wedding DJ services associated with it: Lighting and sound technology and other options (e.g., Dry ice, Spark machine, Selfie booth). And then come the further questions…

The following questions rightly arise in your mind:

The answer to the question, however, is far from simple, as not everything is black or white.

The wedding DJ can provide couples with various technical equipment. Most DJs have basic sound equipment, such as a DJ mixer, speakers, and microphones. Some DJs also offer additional services such as lighting technology or video projection.

There are several types of DJs, but here are the prices for DJ services:

– Starting DJ – 60–150 thousand Forints
– Average DJ – 150-250 thousand Forints
– Professional Wedding DJ – 250-350 thousand Forints
– The most expensive – 350–700 thousand Forints
– Star DJ / Star Performer – 700 thousand – 1 million Forints

1. Startup DJ: What do you need to know about them? (60–150 thousand HUF)

When we are looking for a DJ, we often come across the “deal” or the “there’s always cheaper” category. But is it really a good choice?

– Less experienced: Most DJs in this category do not have many years of experience.
– Part-time activity: Many people take on DJing alongside their daily jobs, so they don’t take this profession seriously enough.
– Quantity-oriented approach: Their primary goal is to organize as many weddings as possible, rather than providing personalized service.
– A “one-man show”: No large companies or organizations behind them. They are difficult to reach and may not be available for every design phase. And this can become a serious source of stress during wedding planning.

Conclusion: While it’s possible to find talented DJs in the “bargain” category, I would not recommend them to my close acquaintances/family members. While it might work for some and there are always exceptions, I would definitely advise people to be cautious. Only choose such a DJ if we have worked with them before, or if we can find verifiable/reliable reviews about them.

We do not recommend their choice to anyone, but of course, if a professional DJ is a friend/relative or acquaintance and only charges a symbolic amount for a favor, that’s another story. But in this price range, wedding DJs are typically just trying to start their business. They probably do it part-time as a side hustle. Thus, the stakes aren’t so high, there are no losses. There is not enough motivation for the big day to be truly High-end. Due to practical shortcomings, they are not adequately prepared for the event and this lack of experience is not something recommended to test at a multi-million forint wedding – where every minute counts – to see if they can handle it. They are not registered, their activity is not legal, so an inspection would end the party. Since they have a second job, their musical repertoire is not up-to-date either. 2. “Average” DJs: Is it worth choosing the average? (HUF 150-250K)

“Average” priced DJs usually have a bit more experience, training, and better reviews. Such DJs usually take their work seriously, as many work full-time or nearly full-time in this field. They appear, perform music, and offer standard DJ services.

What do “Average” DJs” Offer?

– Reliability: Generally more reliable and consistent than occasional or less experienced DJs.
– Extensive experience: Able to play music and make announcements; they work at a variety of events, from weddings all the way through to nightclubs.
– Sole Proprietorships: Many individuals venture into business alone, which comes with various advantages and challenges.

What are the potential challenges?
Since many “Average” DJs are sole proprietorships, one person is responsible for everything: customer service, music planning, and performing at events. This can often result in slow response times and limited customer communication. Furthermore, if the DJ cannot appear for any reason, there is a high risk that there will be no DJ at the wedding.

Example: Choosing such a DJ is like eating at McDonald’s; average and standard offerings with some customization options. While you can always expect consistent and satisfactory quality, don’t anticipate a gourmet experience.

We admit, we might be a little biased, as our team falls into this category, but there are good reasons why this category costs more.

Expert wedding DJs have a wealth of experience and strong references. They have been through many, even hundreds or thousands of weddings and have been working enthusiastically in the profession for years. They regularly participate in training, developing their knowledge in music research, mixing, production, microphone announcements, lighting, and sound engineering.

Conclusion: Wedding expert DJs are the best choice if you want to play it safe. This way, the DJ will have everything they could possibly need (and even some things you might not have thought of yet). This does not mean that every DJ who charges a high price is a wedding expert, but the principle of “you get what you pay for” certainly applies to wedding specialist DJs.

4. The most expensive (HUF 350-700 thousand)

Finally, those wedding DJs who charge between HUF 350,000 and HUF 700,000 for weddings. In our opinion, this amount should only be paid in certain situations. (It is equally important to consider the price-value ratio when it comes to wedding DJ services.) If you’ve seen this DJ work somewhere and were impressed, then booking them for this price is truly worth considering. But why do they ask so much? Many times because they work mainly with foreign customers. (It doesn’t matter to them whether the order is Hungarian or foreign in the end.) Their musical palette is the same as other DJs, but they know that foreigners can afford this surcharge. In addition, they are often introduced through wedding planners, so a significant part of the price goes to the commission system deducted by the wedding planner, as well as marketing costs. Are you sure you’re willing to pay for this?

The result is often that customers pay too much, and the DJ does not deliver the quality we would expect from them. Looking at the other side, there are DJs who are so popular and busy that their supply cannot keep up with demand, so they can charge higher fees. Is this DJ category better than the “average DJ” or “professional wedding DJ” who charge less? Maybe, but in most cases probably not.

Within Event DJ, there are experienced DJs who have been working with us for years and have built a reputation with us. These DJs used to charge less for their services, but since they always did an excellent job, we were happy to pay them more too. However, we also worked with DJs who charged 350,000 instead of 1 million and still delivered great results! In our experience, price matters up to a certain point, but above a certain amount, the extra money paid for the DJ doesn’t necessarily mean more quality.

5. Star DJ / Guest performer (700 thousand – 1 million Ft)

The star DJs, who work professionally and full-time, rightfully charge such high sums for their services. These DJs possess outstanding talent and experience in a specific musical genre. It is only worth choosing them, for example, if we want a star Techno DJ, and we are sure that a significant part of the wedding party, say 80%, loves the techno music genre. This is especially important if there are no older guests at the wedding who may not have grown up with this musical genre.

The dedication of these DJs is unparalleled and reflects genuine devotion! Its excellent reference materials are reassuring, and its masters are also skilled in communicating on the microphone. Furthermore, they always have the proper licenses and the type of insurance that most event venues require.

Important to know: In the case of a star DJ / star performer, you will most likely have to provide the sound and lighting equipment. If you’ve already spent a serious amount of money on a star DJ, then it’s essential that you listen to the music not through a simple home theater amplifier, but through professional sound equipment and a spectacular light show. This can often mean double the cost. + Not much time should be wasted on the technical transition, so the chosen DJ should ideally already have these tools available to ensure a smooth transition/switch between the star DJ and the wedding DJ.
